Microsoft Word Smart Quotes and Article Marketers Don’t Mix

By default, Microsoft Word automatically changes straight quotation marks ( ‘ or ” ) to curly (smart or typographer’s) quotes as you type. This is fine if you are only authoring your works for applications not relating to article marketing. When smart quotes are converted to HTML, the quotes are converted to non-standard characters which end up littering your document with question mark symbols and/or other garbage code.

When in doubt, don’t allow your Ezine Articles to contain smart quotes:

Most articles that are put into article marketing distribution eventually end up being sent to an email newsletter audience. Email newsletter servers have near zero-tolerance for MS Word smart quotes; they will not recognize them as valid ASCII characters (because they are not valid). They are a figment of the Microsoft ASCII imagination. In most cases they will show up as garbage code; thus making you, and your article, look like a real novice lacking proper formatting skills.

At risk are: quotes, apostrophes, double dashes, and 3 periods in a row.

Do you see the downside potential of leaving smart quotes in your articles that you put into distribution? Standard quotes use the lowest common denominator in the ASCII character standards world and this ensures that your articles will look great in any HTML or TEXT format.

How To Disable Microsoft Words Smart Quotes:

1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

2. Under Replace as you type, select or clear the “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes” check box.

Alternatively, you can copy your entire MS Word document over to a non Microsoft text editor (EditPlus, UltraEdit, TextPad, etc) and do a simple search and replace. Search and replace the smart quotes into standard quotes, apostrophes, dashes and dots if applicable.

Caution For Authors Who Do HTML Code For Their Articles in MS Word:

Unless you have smart quotes disabled, it should be noted that smart quotes are not valid HTML code. Therefore, dont even consider using MS Word to do HTML code unless you have the smart quotes feature disabled.

Smart quotes are best left for e-books, physical books in print, PDF documents and any non-HTML related document. The Inner-Ear Dysfunction – Is This the Physiological Cause of Your Phobic Behavior?

Many patients want to know more about the physiological roots of their phobic behavior. If you think your phobias are the product of an inner-ear dysfunction, you may have the same concerns. How did you get this dysfunction in the first place? Can it get worse? Can it get better?

As might be expected, many people are born with an inner-ear dysfunction. But this problem can also be acquired in any number of ways throughout the various stages of your life. Let’s examine some of these possibilities.

GENETICALLY ACQUIRED

Inner-ear dysfunction is frequently in the genes, passed down from generation to generation in a faulty genetic blueprint. If you inherited your inner-ear problems, chances are that other members of your family (parents, grandparents, siblings) have similar problems.

Some of your family members may have phobias; maybe even the same ones you have. Some may have different inner-ear-related symptoms. Others may have phobias and other related symptoms. And some fortunate members of your family may have no visible signs of inner-ear dysfunction.

Regardless of your age, and regardless of how healthy your inner-ear system is, a variety of factors can damage that system at any time. Every item on the preceding list is capable of inflicting this damage. In addition, a healthy inner-ear system can be disrupted by the chemical changes brought on by menopause and by the degenerative effects of old age.

SETTING THE STAGE

As you can see, there are innumerable ways to acquire an inner-ear dysfunction. No wonder this physiological problem is present, to some degree, in more than 20 percent of the population. But regardless of whether you were born with this dysfunction or acquired it at some point in your life, the stage has been set. For once the inner ear is impaired, you are vulnerable to the onset of a vast array of phobias and related symptoms.

Some of my friends ask me: “Matt, what are the best penny stocks to buy right now, in 2010?”

I have to give pause every time someone new asks me that, simply due to one simple rule that I hold near and dear to my heart and to my trading account: Penny stocks are not long term investments. I know when people ask me that they are dreaming of nailing a scrappy startup company’s stock at $1 a share and holding it for 5 years, then selling their shares for $500 each and making a million bucks or something crazy like that.

I don’t always feel like telling them the whole deal that I am about to share with you, so you are benefiting yourself by learning the following lesson described in the rest of this article.

Listen folks, penny stocks are absolutely awesome for trading. I said trading — not investing. There is just too many whipsaws in these types of microcap equities (fancy word for stocks). Now when I say trading, I don’t mean locking yourself in your bedroom in front of the computer every minute the stock market is open.

Rather I am referring to a manageable approach to trading, that is doable even for people who have demanding jobs that prevent them from having access to a computer during the day. It’s a system of identifying a promising pick, buying it, and waiting for it to hit a designated exit point. It’s really very simple. It does not completely eliminate the risk of trading penny stocks but it helps to minimize it since you are not blindly buying a penny stock and then holding it for a long time regardless of what it does.

For instance, if you buy a penny stock and identify an area where you would like to sell for a profit, you sell it when it reaches that level, be it at 50% or 500% profit levels. On the flip side, you can buy a stock and define an area where you will sell if it drops to certain level. That way you cut your losses before you potentially lose your entire investment.Look, if you want to go out and buy some blue chip stock like GE or a tech giant like GOOG that’s fine and you will likely do well over the course of 2010 and beyond. Just don’t adopt that mentality for any microcap (penny) stock. I have seen too many people have their trading accounts wiped out because they believed a hyped up story of a microcap stock that was too good to be true.
